Party Astronauts win Mythic Winter Cup 2
Party Astronauts have secured first place in the second Mythic Winter Cup of 2022, following a 2-0 victory over oNe. With Wesley "viz" Harris filling in the gap left behind by the recent departure of David "cynic" Polster, the Party Astronauts successfully claimed their second Mythic Winter Cup victory this year.
The Party Astronauts made quick work of their opponents in Group A, swiftly moving past David "J0LZ" Jolin's men on Strife in their opening match before dispatching an ATK lacking South African duo Rhys "Fadey" Armstrong and Gareth "MisteM" Ries, securing their semifinal spot. ATK would go on to narrowly take down Strife in the group's decider match to snag a semifinal spot of their own.
In Group B, oNe had great success in their debut event with their new lineup, featuring Alencar "trk' Rossato and Ruann "keiz" Rotondano in place of Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa and Matheus "prt" Scuvero. The Brazillian side made quick work of James "Jachro" Brooks' REIGN, and then booked their ticket for playoffs after a close victory over Third Impact. Third Impact followed oNe shortly thereafter to the playoffs, as they scraped by Eros in the Group B decider match.
Party Astronaut's semifinal matchup against Third Impact kicked off on the latter squad's choice of Mirage, with Party Astronauts starting their CT-side in a dominant fashion, running away with the half with an 11-4 scoreline. Third Impact managed to secure the second pistol round to hopefully begin their comeback, but a 1v3 clutch from stand-in viz put Party Astronauts back in the driver's seat, leading to the map swiftly concluding 16-6 for the Astronauts.
The series continued on Nuke, where Third Impact was large and in charge for much of the map. Unfortunately, this map was marred with technical problems, with several players on the Third Impact side suffering from connectivity issues. The map marched on to overtime, with Party Astronauts eventually reclaiming the lead with a 16-15 scoreline before Third Impact opted to forfeit due to the pervasive technical issues.
In the other semifinal match, oNe took on ATK in a bid to show that the squad could still perform without young star malbsMd. oNe got off to a promising start on their pick of Dust2, taking four of the first five rounds. ATK began to close the gap, bringing the scoreline to 5-4, until oNe regained their composure and ran away with the rest of the half, dropping only one more round to finish the half 10-5.
ATK again got close to tying things up by taking the first three rounds of the half, but once oNe had a full buy available, they secured four rounds straight to further solidify their lead. ATK started to fight back with two more rounds of their own, but by this point, it was simply too late, as oNe locked in the last two rounds they needed to win the first map, finishing with a 16-10 scoreline.
ATK's pick of Overpass took a similar direction to Dust2, with oNe reigning supreme during most of the first half, with the Brazilians posting an 8-1 lead at one point in the half. Towards the end of the half, ATK managed to claim some rounds for themselves, with the half coming to a close with another 10-5 scoreline. Both sides spent much of the second half trading rounds back and forth, neither squad able to string together more than a couple at a time. With oNe already having a sizeable lead from the first half, this worked out in their favor, as they went on to close out the map and series 16-9.
oNe's pick of Mirage was the starting point for the grand final, where Party Astronauts got off to a dominant start, sweeping aside oNe for much of the first half to put together an 11-4 lead going into the Astronaut's T-side. Despite the daunting lead they had to overcome, oNe was not at all dissuaded, as they pieced together five rounds in a row to nearly tie up the game. With oNe on the brink of overtaking them, Party Astronauts finally posted their first round of the half, and the remainder of the half resulted in a slugfest, with the two squads constantly trading rounds. In the end, Party Astronauts narrowly edged out oNe, snagging the last two rounds to finally end Mirage 16-14.
Party Astronauts got off to a similarly dominant start on their pick of Inferno, thrashing oNe with a 12-3 scoreline on their T-side. With the Astronauts securing the second pistol round and the round right after, it seemed like the game was all but finished. But oNe were still determined, putting together a promising streak of six rounds before Party Astronauts finally reached match point. oNe secured another round after this, but with Party Astronauts on the brink of victory, there was little that could be done. Party Astronauts finished the map 16-10, earning themselves the first place prize of $4,000, successfully defending their title of Mythic Winter Cup champions.
