University of Texas at Dallas win Java Collegiate #2
The University of Texas at Dallas defeated the University of Houston in the grand finals of the second Java Collegiate tournament this past weekend, crowning a new collegiate champion. UT Dallas finished the first collegiate tournament in third place, with only one member, Brandon "Proximal" Nguyen, returning to play in the second tournament.
To net their spot in the grand finals, UT Dallas first took on their fellow Texans from the University of Texas at Austin in the semifinals. A 2-0 victory went their way as Scott "Itsumi" Linden helped to power his team to a comeback from a 6-9 deficit on the first map of Inferno, with the team going on to dominate 16-5 on Overpass to earn their grand finals berth.
UT Dallas' grand final opponents, the University of Houston, had a similar path to the finals, taking down Kennesaw State University 2-0 in their own semifinal matchup. The first map was a 16-4 blowout victory on Mirage, with the second map of Inferno seeing a back-and-forth battle for the lead with the University of Houston team narrowly edging out a 16-14 win for the series victory.
The grand final showdown saw Itsumi and Tony "aSauce" Guardia combine to help UT Dallas net themselves a 2-0 win, although this victory was far more hard-fought than their semifinal bout. Itsumi and co. opened up the series on Dust2 with a 10-5 CT side, but struggled for control in the latter portions of the map as they only managed a single round out of the opening ten in the second half.
With the University of Houston stealing the lead away and sitting just below match point at 14-11, UT Dallas were forced to fight back and reclaim the lead, grabbing themselves the final five rounds of the map to edge out a 16-14 win.
The second map, UT Dallas' pick of Mirage, saw the team pull ahead 9-6 at the end of their T side half, and this time they were able to maintain control with a win in the second half pistol round. A timely economic reset following the University of Houston's first gun round victory allowed for UT Dallas to further extend their lead to 13-7, with aSauce helping to eventually close out the map 16-11 after shutting down an attempted comeback by the Houston players.
