Cloud9 unable to close out G2; eliminated in London
With both compLexity and Liquid going 3-0 in the group stage, the first match featuring a North American team on Day 4 was between Cloud9 and G2 — both of whom have struggled thus far in London.
The American/European side got off to a good start on Inferno, with the Terrorist side pistol and the following two rounds claimed, though not in clean fashion. G2 were able to get two round on to the board before another three round streak from Cloud9, and then the Frenchmen were back with a vengeance, powering to an 8-7 score at the half.
Kicking off the second half, G2 were able to mirror Cloud9's pistol win and follow-up rounds. With Cloud9 at times severely misplaying advantageous situations, the half was considerably scrappier than the first, with neither side able to go on a prolonged winning streak. Tim "autimatic" Ta had to pull his team back from the brink with a 1v2 clutch in round 28, keeping G2 from achieving map point. At the end of 30 rounds, the teams found themselves deadlocked.
Seemingly getting their feet under them, Cloud9 looked poised to sweep the first half of overtime, but a bungled retake and autimatic near-heroics saw them settle for a 17-16 lead. With Cloud9 on map point, and in a 3v2 with the bomb planted, catastrophe struck as autimatic took down a weakened Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham, allowing G2 to bring the match to overtime two.
Despite Skadoodle showing form throughout the entire match, something clicked for G2, they got out to a 21-19 lead. In what would be the final round of the map, Cloud9 got picked apart one by one, until only in-game leader Mikail "Golden" Selim was left standing. When he fell, so too did Cloud9's chances of repeating as Major champions.
The final match of the day will see Astralis taking on MIBR, with the victor claiming a spot in the playoffs next week.
