dexter credits focusing on individual plays in FlyQuest's return to form
FlyQuest has had an up-and-down season since signing for the Los Angeles organization. The squad had a great showing at ESL Pro League Season 19, but since then they struggled to replicate that form. The team have finished towards the bottom in several of their international LAN appearances, but here in Atlanta they were the first team to qualify for playoffs after dominant wins over BetBoom and SAW.
Dust2.us' Jeffrey Moore spoke with FlyQuest IGL Christopher "dexter" Nong to speak about this return to form, their dominant opening round win over BetBoom, and how players like INS are continuing to excel. You can catch the full interview below while snippets are the conversation are down the page.
What the the biggest contributing factor towards taking down a team like BetBoom? You guys absolutely smashed them.
As cliche as it sounds, playing our own game. We do a lot of focus on just making sure that we're always in control of our game. We didn't really anti strat so much in terms of the details. We just knew they would use Long a lot, and I think Liazz and INS were well-prepared to counter them and get all the kills they needed.
You mentioned INS, how has he been playing, he’s been on top of his game?
Yeah, he's been really good. Just playing pretty awesomely. Like, I don't really know. He's just getting all the shots and making the right decisions. It's good that we're kind of focused on everyone contributing in their own way in their own game. I think that relieves a lot of pressure for him and whatnot, and he's just making more right decisions and there's not so much forced decision. So yeah, it was just him playing well.
Last time we saw you guys was at ESL Pro League Season 20, which had an unfortunate result for you. What's been the overall focus in this month off from international competition to be ready for Atlanta?
I think EPL was an OK event for us, even though we didn't make it that far in it. I think the results, like playing very close games against FaZe and Sangal, show that we need to tighten up a few things. It wasn't anything huge or whatever. So what we just went into being in Australia was just to focus on ourselves so that we don't really overdo things too much. For example, I wasn't adding in too many tactics or anything like that. People were more focused on the individual and all the space and making sure that they were in control of rounds, and that big just for us.
FlyQuest awaits their opponent in the playoffs tomorrow.
