Media: Saudi Prince Faisal proposed cancelling IESF WEC 2024
A report by James Fudge of The Esports Advocate (TEA) released today detailed a meeting on September 10th where IESF President and Saudi Prince Faisal proposed a measure to the board of the International Esports Federation (IESF) to cancel the upcoming World Esports Championship 2024.
According to TEA's reporting, multiple sources told the publication there was "general confusion" about the meeting and that the proposal as IESF 2024 is set to take place in less than two months in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The proposal was put forward by Prince Faisal, who is simultaneously the President of the IESF, founder of the Saudi Esports Federation, and vice president of the Global Esports Federation.
In this atmosphere of confusion, IESF board members reportedly asked for the vote to be a blind vote due to "safety" concerns, with the measure being voted down. However, in a strange move Prince Faisal hinted that should the IESF cancel the event, he could compel the Global Esports Federation to also cancel their Global Esports Games event in China that December.
With the measure being voted down, IESF WEC 2024 is still on course to host the 24-team LAN in Riyadh, with the CS2 event set to start on November 11th. The United States and Canada will both have teams in attendance, with the former Perseverance squad and Homyno representing the two countries, respectively.
