GODSENT win ESEA Advanced with 3-0 sweep of ATK
In a shock twist that no one saw coming, Stockholm Major-bound side GODSENT have won ESEA Advanced Season 38 without dropping a map in both the regular season and postseason. In the process they have earned direct promotion to ESEA Premier Season 39 and bag a cash prize of $7,000.
In the third round of the upper bracket, the foreign squads reigned supreme as both GODSENT and ATK claimed 2-0 sweeps over their opponents, Detonate and Northern Forces, respectively.
In the lower bracket Synthetic dispatched Synergy and Valors defeated X13 to set up matchups with the aforementioned losing sides from the upper bracket. Neither Synthetic or Valors won their subsequent matches against Detonate and Northern Forces, respectively, which set up a showdown between the two teams for fifth place and a spot at ESEA Premier Season 38 Relegation.
Synthetic won that decider 2-1 with two of the three matches requiring overtime to separate the two rosters. Andrew "Tender" Cote finished with 98 kills in the series to put his side through to Relegation, while Brandon "YuZ" Cyr posted 85 frags for Valors in the loss. Detonate dealt with Northern Forces by the same scoreline to advance to the consolidation final.
In the upper bracket final GODSENT rolled ATK on Vertigo before hitting a speedbump on Inferno, where the South African roster replicated their opponents' nine-round CT-side to force overtime. The 15-15 scoreline at the end of regulation was the closest that GODSENT got to conceding 16 rounds all season. The Brazilians took four straight in overtime to secure the 2-0 sweep. Eduardo "dumau" Wolkmer led all players with 50 kills in two maps.
ATK were met by Detonate following their loss to GODSENT and the North American side kept the losses coming by securing their map pick of Nuke in thirty rounds. But Ian "motm" Hardy and his South African teammates dug in and bounced back with a gritty reverse sweep on Vertigo and then Inferno. Four players from ATK finished with 60 kills or more in the series. However, David "Delta9" Shafer led all players with 64 frags in the loss for Detonate.
ATK fared no better in the grand final against Epitacio "TACO" de Melo and his troops than they did in the upper bracket final. The Brazilians started with a map advantage and extended the series lead to 2-0 after turning a slim 8-7 halftime lead on Vertigo into a convincing win with a solid second-half CT-side. Strong CT-sides continued to be a prevailing theme on Mirage, where GODSENT dropped just one round in the first half, then quickly converted on offense to lock in their ESEA Premier slot with a 3-0 sweep. dumau topped the server again, this time with 47 frags, while motm led ATK with 30 kills in the series loss.
