daps: "If changes are needed, changes are needed"
NRG have exited the PGL Copenhagen Major Americas RMR with a disappointing 0-2 record after just two days of competition. The team were invited to the event despite not qualifying, thanks to Rocket admitting to have broken the rules during the Americas RMR Closed Qualifier.
Due to the short notice between the invite and the start of the event, Damian "daps" Steele and the team didn't have time to bootcamp as most of their opponents did. The IGL talked with Dust2.us' Jeffrey "Mnmzzz" Moore about the lack of practice before the event, the future of the lineup, and the player's performance.
Please note that the full interview can be found below on YouTube, while the transcript has some key snippets from their conversation.
You have been sent home but you did have a comeback moment on Anubis against MIBR. What do you think ultimately changed the momentum against you guys in overtime?
It's hard to say because Anubis has been one of our weaker maps and we didn't have much preparation going into this event, we didn't even know we were coming here, we didn't have a bootcamp. In terms of momentum, we were just playing our game, doing things that we practiced online and it slowly came together a little bit, but a little bit too late.
One bright spot of this squad thus far has been HexT's performances. While it didn't materialize here on LAN, he has been a phenomenal player online. What's his impact on the squad?
HexT has been our most consistent player, he had good communication, he has a good understanding of the game, even though EG didn't have a lot of success, he did take good things from them and learned a lot, it seems like. I think it also helps that he was playing actively before he joined our team, so he's already got that level and know-how of how he wants to play. He has been super reliable for us in most categories.
Do you get the impression that NRG are willing to give you time to figure out your roster or were they expecting more results in a shorter time frame?
The reason I even took the ambitious route of playing again is that NRG is an amazing org willing to take time, they made that clear. Even when I was on NRG originally, in 2017, we didn't do shit for all of 2017, we made a couple of Pro Leagues, I think. Then 2018 rolls around and we are really good. It's just a process, we made the team really fast, we had to get only North American players, which was a restriction too because we couldn't get someone over for the ECL stuff. Time is going to heal all, and we are going to figure our issues out and if changes are needed, changes are needed.
