Nadeshot on re-entering CS: "There is a world where it happens"
After a failed Brazilian roster and a globally successful Australian roster, North American esports organization 100Thieves is once again in the news as founder and CEO Matthew "Nadeshot" Haag spoke about the possibility of re-entering the title in a recent podcast.
Then in late 2019, 100 Thieves had returned to the scene when they signed Australian side Renegades, who just finished in the top four at the StarLadder Berlin Major. Nadeshot had pointed out the difficulties of fielding the Australian roster while living in NA during a podcast episode in April. He explained that the team was constantly traveling to Europe for tournaments and bootcamps while they struggled to find great practice while back in North America.
The organization parted ways with their latest roster in October 2020 as doubt sounded about the economic viability of North American Counter-Strike in the midst of a global pandemic. Since then, Nadeshot has teased about 100Thieves re-entering the game, saying in April that he was ruling out re-joining the title unless something dramatic changes.
Well, since then, Counter-Strike 2 has been announced and several organizations are rumored to be looking at the space with hope of entering. Just recently, Dust2.us spoke with M80, a new organization in North America that was starting to explore that space. Additionally, famed League of Legends organization FlyQuest entered the Counter-Strike space with their acquisition of the former CLG Red roster.
Throughout the podcast segment, Nadeshot spoke about the viability of entering into Counter-Strike once more, but also acknowledged that the company had to face two rounds of layoffs, something he is not keen on ever doing again. He pointed this to over-expansion, saying that they have been going "all-in every year" and now had to face realities that some things were not financially viable, no matter how interested they were.
As Nadeshot explains when the topic comes up "There is a world where it happens" when referring to getting back into the title. "It's got to be the right time, the right opportunity." He further explained later during the segment that he is also concerned about creating a squad that would fail to fill fan's expectations for an organization of their stature, which is part of the reason why they are hesitant to re-enter.
