Brazil only wins one match after Day One
For some reason, Brazil has not been the best place for Brazilian teams to perform. During the IEM Rio Major last November, both Imperial and 00 Nation exited the event without winning a single match. Fellow South American team 9z did not fare much better as they won two matches before being eliminated by fnatic.
FURIA was the lone standout from the home country as they went 3-1 in the first stage of the Major and would eventually make it to the Major semi-finals before falling to Heroic.
At this year's edition of the Rio event, things have gone a similar way to the previous year. Imperial faced a tough opponent in NIP in the first round, suffering a 16-5 defeat in the best-of-one before playing against TheMongolz, who recently left their organization. Against the Mongolian opponents, Imperial was unable to outlast them through the three maps, suffering elimination on the first day.
Elsewhere, North American-based Brazilian teams in MIBR and FURIA had mixed results against their first-round opponents. MIBR started off strong against Cloud9, but the Russians were simply stronger and looking to prove their failure to qualify for the BLAST.tv Paris Major was a fluke. The match was close to begin, but Cloud9 would pull away to win 16-8.
FURIA, finally, were able to find some success in their matchup against fnatic. Both teams are highly ranked and with their success at their respective BLAST.tv Paris Major RMRs, will meet one another in the New Legends stage. This matchup was an important stepping stone for FURIA as they have faced scrutiny for their underperformances at major events, with a crucial overtime 19-15 win instilling confidence in themselves and their fans.
With Imperial eliminated, Brazilian fans can look towards MIBR and FURIA playing later today at 10:00AM against Vitality and at 01:30PM against FaZe, respectively. MIBR will be playing in the elimination match, while FURIA hopes to qualify for the Playoffs with a victory today.
