FURIA have a BIG problem
After conquering the Americans from Complexity in their BO1 match earlier today, BIG looked to upset the Brazilians in the BO3 qualification match for the IEM Katowice mainstage. FURIA, the 9th best team in the world, is looking to make another stage appearance and continue off of their successful run at the IEM Brazil Major.
Starting off on BIG's pick of Anubis, FURIA were first on the offense but were unable to find immediate success. BIG jumped out with a pistol win and rolled that over into a 7-2 lead before the Brazilians could even find their feet. However find their feet they would as FURIA would recover from the initial shock to their system and close the lead to one by winning the last five of six rounds in the half to make it 7-8.
Once FURIA started playing as the defense, they seemed to have a much easier time. A pistol win would set the tone as Rafael "saffee" Costa led the way to a 16-11 victory. The AWPer posted a 1.44 Rating, with a 78.9 ADR, and a 77.8% KAST.
With all the momentum for the Brazilians, it looked like FURIA might be able to close it out on their pick of Mirage, but that was not in the script. Despite continuing their winning ways and securing the pistol, they would lose control of their T-side and fall behind 5-10 at the end of the first half. The game would not change when FURIA would go to their CT side with the Germans, led by Nils "k1to" Gruhne, would squash any hope of a comeback and secure their opponent map pick 16-9.
On Ancient it was the same old story with k1to being an unstoppable monster, leading the way with 23 kills in the first half. It was the BIG show the entire way as FURIA could not find any sort of footing on their CT side on a notoriously CT-sided map. With it FURIA's turn on the T-side, they were able to successfully plant the bomb, but unable to hold off the Germans as they defused and cruised to a 16-9 win after an attempted comeback.
FURIA will now head down to the lower bracket where they will play against the winner of paiN v. IHC on Friday.
