Evil Geniuses fell short despite Stewie2K's best efforts

Complexity best Evil Geniuses on day four of ESL Pro League Season 15 Group D

JT and company's fight for a spot in the playoffs continues.

The fourth and penultimate day of competition in Düsseldorf has concluded for North America. This saw Complexity and Evil Geniuses fight in an American derby, with Johnny "JT" Theodosiou's men coming out on top to secure their first win of the group. Meanwhile, Evil Geniuses' woes continue, as the squad's winless campaign thus far continues as they currently sit bottom of Group D.

The first map of the skirmish took place on Evil Geniuses' pick of Inferno with Jake "Stewie2K" Yip and co. winning the first four rounds to start the map in the lead. The remainder of the half descended into a back-and-forth affair, with a continuous exchange of rounds ultimately seeing EG enter the second half boasting a 9-6 advantage. A 1v3 by Paytyn "junior" Johnson helped Complexity tie the score at the start of their offense, but Evil Geniuses quickly began to pull away shortly thereafter, adding a six-round spree to their name to easily reach match point. A one-round statement by Complexity did help interrupt the domination, but this would ultimately be short-lived with Evil Geniuses soon posting the remaining round they needed to take Inferno 16-10, marking their first map win of the event so far.

The two teams then headed to Complexity's pick of Vertigo where both sides exchanged their own three-round bursts to start the map dead even. Much like Inferno, Evil Geniuses began to run away with the half, winning five rounds to lock in a first half victory. JT's boys did start to make a comeback towards the final stages of their T-side, posting the final three rounds to head into their CT-side just one round down. A three-round addition to Evil Geniuses' tally to begin the second half spawned ideas of a 2-0 sweep in favour of Stewie2K and company, but a stalwart defense from Complexity shut the door on any chance of that happening. Notably, Michael "Grim" Wince posted a stellar 1.93 rating on the defense as Complexity went on an eight-round tear to lock in Vertigo 16-11 and send the series to Nuke for the deciding map.

Although Evil Geniuses had shown some promise in the first few maps, the start of Nuke turned out to be a completely different story. A couple rounds at the start of the half would prove to be one of EG's CT-side main takeaways, as Complexity managed to continuously outmanoeuver their foes on their way to an overwhelming 11-4 T-side effort. Despite this hefty deficit, Evil Geniuses looked more rejuvenated on the attack, finding five of the first six rounds to claw themselves back into the match. Unfortunately, things soon fell flat for EG from here on out, with Grim and Justin "FaNg" Coakley joining forces to spearhead Complexity to match point. A singular round by EG did assist in getting the side to double digits, but it didn't take long for Complexity did post the lone round they needed to win Nuke 16-10 and take the series 2-1.

Complexity's chances at securing a spot in the playoffs now rests on them and NAVI beating Astralis today and tomorrow, respectively, while also having Stewie2K's men take down AGO in their final match of Group D. Should all this happen, JT and company will have booked their spot in the next stage of the event alongside fellow North American squad Liquid who made it out of Group C.

The two NA matchups tomorrow will both begin at 01:30PM with the following games:

Evil Geniuses vs AGO

Complexity vs Astralis
