Evil Geniuses lose first round against Astralis in comedic pistol round ninja defuse
On the first round of Vertigo, the Evil Geniuses hit an early snag. The pistol round looked promising with a quick opening pick against Astralis and with some sneaky footwork, they traded out their advantage into a simple 4v3 post-plant on the A site.
More quick shots from the underdogs left only one remaining Danish player alive compared to three Evil Geniuses. Thinking the last remaining Astralis member, Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke, was saving his kit and armor, they fell off the site while unbeknownst to them, he was hidden in a tricky corner near the bombsite.
As the American side slinked away from the explosive to celebrate their soon-to-be round win, k0nfig inched his way onto the site. As the bomb whined to the forty-second timer, he narrowly defused it, winning the first round in what is sure to be an embarrassment for the American side.
Astralis would carry the momentum from the wacky pistol round to a firm 6-0 lead and a dominant 11-4 half. Zonic's law, no longer being Astralis' coach, did not come into effect as the Danes closed out the map 16-9. If the opening round went the other way, perhaps the final scoreline would have been tighter. The disastrous pistol leaves spectators wondering what could have been as we head into Astralis’ pick of Overpass.
