Playfly Sports acquire WorldGaming Network and Collegiate Star League

Rob Johnson will be the CEO of the newly-founded Playfly Esports division.

Thursday afternoon Playfly Sports, a Philadelphia-based sports marketing company for college and high school sports, ventured into the amateur esports scene by acquiring WorldGaming Network and Collegiate Star League. Both companies will continue to operate under their existing branding under the Playfly umbrella.

The individual tabbed to run this new esports division is Rob Johnson, the former Chief Operating Officer of Nerd Street Gamers. Johnson is tasked with turning Playfly and its subsidiaries into the "industry-leading presence in the collegiate, amateur and semi-pro esports market".

The high school market in particular lacks definitive structure to act as an efficient pipeline for young, premier talent to establish themselves with collegiate, semi-professional, or professional opportunities in the esports space. One of Playfly's key aims is to increase opportunities for esports participation at high school and college campuses nationwide and make "esports advisory services" readily available to those interested in improving the aforementioned lack of infrastructure.

The acquisition serves as a needed fresh start for Collegiate Star League, who were previously under a great deal of scrutiny after failing to pay numerous casters, observers, and production staff for events that they hosted. Dust2.us has confirmed that those casters have been paid, but has not been able to confirm that all outstanding debts with CSL's previous staff members are settled at this time.

Registration for the upcoming Collegiate Star League season runs through September 27th, you can register here.
