First Thunderpick Series reaches quarterfinals
The first North American Series of the Thunderpick World Championship has reached the top eight teams, where four were invited and four have played from the Round of 20. The playoff bracket will continue in similar BO3 fashion over the next five days, sending the top two teams to the World Championship in October and splitting a total prize pool of $25,000 between them.
The four invitees joining the competition starting tomorrow are ex-ATK, Nouns, Party Astronauts, and Wildcard. Joining them, after each winning two BO3s so far, are FLUFFY AIMERS, Rocket, Looking for Org (ex-Snakes Den), and timbermen.
Matches first kicked off on Monday and continued on Tuesday with the Round of 20:
-
FLUFFY AIMERS vs Detonate (2-0)
-
Reason vs Limitless (0-2)
-
Rocket vs Shimmer (2-0)
-
Mythic vs 7AM (2-0)
-
LFO (ex-Snakes Den) vs EG Gold (2-0)
-
Take Flyte vs Torch (W-FF)
-
timbermen vs FlyQuest RED (2-0)
-
WITHOUTWARNING vs OMiT (2-0)
Notably, the organizers of the event invited several women's teams to the competition. FlyQuest RED and Shimmer both fielded their usual rosters, however, EG Gold recently dropped two of their players and coach, so had to field substitutes. Those ended up being former CLG Red player Juliana "Juli" Tosic, as well as benched EG player Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte and EG coach Joseph "Muenster" Lima.
Moving onto the Round of 12, the first match was between FLUFFY AIMERS and Limitless, with yet another 2-0 series win, this time on an extended overtime 25-22 Ancient and a 16-12 Vertigo. Following up, Rocket took down Mythic 16-12 on both Overpass and Ancient.
On the following day, LFO secured the first 2-1 of the event with a 16-4 Inferno, 7-16 Nuke loss, and a 16-7 Vertigo to reverse sweep the series. Finally, timbermen made short work of WITHOUTWARNING with a 16-12 and a 16-10 on Vertigo and Mirage, respectively.
Moving forward, the quarterfinals are now set and scheduled for the next two days:
The winners of the quarterfinals will move on to face each other in the semis on Monday, and finally the grand final will played on Tuesday. Both finalists will quality to the World Championship and receive a European bootcamp prior to the event. The winner will also bag themselves $20,000, while $5,000 will go to the losing finalist.
