Evil Geniuses eliminated
In a must-win match for the American organization after facing weeks of criticism, they would play IHC in the 8th-place decider match in the Last Chance stage. IHC, who has been on an incredible run of form featuring an IEM Katowice that saw them eliminate FURIA and Cloud9, have struggled more in ESL Pro League where they faced 0-2 losses against MIBR and Outsiders.
The match started out on IHC's pick of Inferno, where EG surprisingly jumped out in front early on their CT-side to take a 7-2 lead, but was unable to hold it any further as IHC would crawl their way back to take control of the map 8-7. The second half would go the same way that the end of the first did, with IHC maintaining control as they cruised to a 16-10 lead.
With EG staring down the barrel of elimination, they were headed to their map pick of Overpass where they had mounted an almost improbable comeback against Eternal Fire after being down 13-1. Now, however, EG did not even let that game get out of hand as they dominated on their T-side with an 11-4 half, cleaning up the second half to secure their pick 16-6.
Forcing the final map of Nuke, EG and IHC would have to battle it out to see who among them will be headed to a later match in the day and who would have to say goodbye to Malta. The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with IHC pulling away as the victors with a 10-5 half on their T-side. The tides were hard for the Americans to turn as they would be unable to find a way back into the map and eventually fall 6-16.
