Favorites and Luminosity through to MDL semi-finals
Spread out over the previous week, Season 30's quarter-finals matches have concluded, and now only four teams vie for the top prize of $17,500. Below is a recap of last week's action.
The first quarter-finals match took place on March 21st and saw Bad News Bears face off against Mythic with the veto taking the two teams to Overpass, Dust2, and Train. On Overpass, Mythic opened the series with a slight 8-7 lead on their T-side, setting the stage for a close series. However, after winning their T-side pistol, Bad News Bears completely ran away with map one, absolutely demolishing Mythic’ s CT-side defense, only allowing them one round to close out the first map 16-9.
This domination would continue onto Dust2 where Bad News Bears were relentless on their T-side completely sweeping the half 15-0. After that, Bad News Bears closed off the series by winning the following pistol round, securing their ticket to the semi-finals. During this one-sided series, Tyson "TenZ" Ngo put up a 44-22 K-D alongside a 101.4 ADR over the series.
The second matchup of the quarter-finals took place four days later on the 24th seeing iNTACT face off against Singularity, who have recently returned from WESG. The veto process came down to the two teams facing off on Mirage, Dust2, and Inferno. Starting off on iNTACT's map pick of Mirage, the rookie MDL team was overwhelmed by Singularity's CT-side defense, with the half ending 12-3 in Singularity's favor.
When iNTACT moved over their CT-side, they were immediately put against the ropes as Singularity won the opening pistol and the following two rounds to achieve map point. iNTACT's best efforts were able to net the team three more rounds, however powerful performances from Ricky "floppy" Kemery and Ryan "ryann" Welsh ended Mirage 16-5.
Transitioning onto Singularity's map pick of Dust2, things immediately started to look sour for iNTACT as Singularity initially claimed six rounds in a row after winning their opening CT pistol. Although iNTACT would eventually find their footing and claim five rounds of their own Singularity were still to close out the half with a comfortable 10-5 lead.
On their T-side, Singularity would once again win the opening pistol and make a three-round conversion out of it. As the second half progressed, iNTACT was finally able to trade rounds with Singularity, but Singularity would eventually map two 16-11 and close out the series 2-0. During the series, Singularity won all four pistol rounds which greatly helped their efforts in securing a semi-finals spot.
The third matchup of the quarter-finals was a Brazilian brawl as FURIA took on oNe. FURIA were the clear favorites coming into this match, having maintained a perfect 17-0 record during the regular season, with the veto taking the action to Train, Overpass, and Inferno.
One thing worth noting is that oNe was forced to enlist the services of their coach Olavo "chucky" Napoleão in place of Bruno "b4rtin" Câmara due to him joining the team after the roster lock. However, even with their coach as a stand-in, oNe surprised with a very strong starting performance on Train, ending the half with a 10-5 lead over FURIA. Even after losing the second half, oNe continued their upset performance against FURIA taking map one with a comfortable 16-8 scoreline.
After the initial shock of losing to their domestic rival, FURIA were able to turn the tables on Overpass, winning the first half, with a T-side performance, 10-5. After this FURIA continued their strong performance, only allowing oNe a single CT round, thus closing out map two 16-6.
With the series tied 1-1, FURIA and oNe went to Inferno to see which Brazilian squad would advance into the semi-finals. After an initially close 9-6 half which saw oNe briefly take the lead, once FURIA made it onto their CT-side they appeared far more comfortable. FURIA's CT defense was largely impenetrable as they nullified oNe's T-side to close out the series with a 16-8 victory.
The final match of the MDL quarter-finals had Luminosity take on Spacestation. On Luminosity's map pick of Overpass, they got off to a relatively comfortable start, winning their T-side with a slight 9-6 lead. Moving onto their CT-side, they continued to claim rounds winning their opening pistol and the following three rounds. For the rest of the match, Luminosity would stay into the lead, although Spacestation attempted to mount a comeback, winning five rounds in a row to nearly tie up the score at 12-15. However, their comeback ran out of steam as Luminosity were able to win the next round closing out map one 16-12.
Moving onto Dust2, the opening half ended with Luminosity coming out ahead with a razor thin 8-7 lead. Moving onto the second half, Spacestation would win their T-side pistol but after Luminosity won the following round with a forcebuy, a strong CT-side defense by Luminosity did not allow Spacestation to gain more than a handful of rounds. Luminosity would close out the map and the series with a 16-11 victory on Dust2. During the series, Henrique "HEN1" Teles stood out a 1.31 rating along with leading the server in kills.
