Bravado to DH Winter playoffs over OpTic, G2; compLexity fall short
The first day of DreamHack Winter 2018 has reached its end, with Bravado making a miracle run through the group stage, qualifying for the playoffs bracket as the first seed for Group B, and compLexity falling short in the winners' match.
Opening the DreamHack Winter tournament, compLexity took on x6tence Galaxy on Mirage. The North American squad pounced on x6tence, taking seven rounds off the bat before the Swedish team could respond. After two more rounds, compLexity's reign was briefly stopped by Nicolas "Plopski" Gonzalez Zamora and co., taking four more rounds before compLexity closed out the half with one more round, bringing the scoreline to 10-5 at halftime.
Shahzeb "ShahZaM" Khan and Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz took four rounds off the bat in the second half, which was mirrored by x6tence, who struggled to stay in the map but managed to squeeze out five more rounds before compLexity closed the map 16-10.
OpTic and Bravado clashed in the Group B opener, with the map landing on Dust2. With a shaky start from OpTic, Bravado took the first half by storm, taking a huge lead with a 10-5 scoreline. René "cajunb" Borg was having none of that, leading OpTic to usurp the lead from the South African team, with the Danish squad's lead going up to 13-12. Bravado got their head back in the game in the last five rounds, edging out four of the five last rounds to just barely take down OpTic 16-14.
Back in Group A, compLexity faced off against Heroic, who had won their opening match against LDLC in a 16-6 match. Starting on the CT-side of Nuke, Heroic crushed compLexity, with the Danish squad raking in a 12-3 lead at halftime. Though Shahzeb "ShahZaM' Khan was able to pull out an impressive performance in the second half, Heroic's lead was far too great for the North American squad, who ultimately lost the map 16-10 and have been knocked down to the consolation final of the group.
In the final match of the day, Bravado went head-to-head with G2, who have already found some success with their new roster, taking down ENCE earlier in the group in a 16-14 comeback on Dust2. In spite of a 3-0 early lead from Bravado on Nuke, G2 began to ramp up their lead on the CT-side, taking a modest 9-6 lead at halftime.
In the second half, with G2 on the path to taking the map with a 12-6 scoreline, Dimitri "Detrony" Hadjipaschali led Bravado through an arduous eight-round streak, flipping the scoreline 14-12. Despite a slip-up in the 27th round, Bravado were able to successfully secure the comeback, taking Nuke 16-13. G2 have been knocked down to the decider match, while Bravado proceed to the semifinals over the French squad.
