s0m: "I have a trial with compLexity sometime in the next few months"
During the ESL Pro League Season 7 Finals, we managed to catch Sam "s0m" Oh of compLexity while he was visiting the event to talk about his past and future in competing as well as the news surrounding FPL and Rank S.
I wanted to start by going back to when you played with Naventic. What were your thoughts about being removed from the team?
When I was playing with Naventic, it was bound to happen eventually. It was either that or I was going to leave - me and the team were talking about it, but it was bound to happen eventually.
Since then, you've become a streamer for compLexity. What's it like being tied to such a prestigious organization?
Once in a lifetime opportunity. I like it here a lot because it's not like any other organization - they treat you better than others from what I can see. They're like a family to you.
Notably, you're only fifteen still, so you can't play in MDL. What's your opinion on that rule?
I don't really have my own opinion on the rule, it's just it is what it is. Even if I did have my own opinion it wouldn't change anything. It's set in stone. For all the up and coming players, it's just a matter of time for them.
Are you looking to be joining a new team soon, or anything like that?
I'm just a streamer for compLexity right now, but I've been looking for a team - I have a trial with compLexity sometime in the next few months, I don't know exactly when, but I am looking to compete.
You've also been placing highly in Rank S and FPL since you've been a streamer. What are your thoughts about the current state or FPL and Rank S?
Right now I think it's a battle between FPL and Rank S, players are switching back and forth - ESEA is trying to do this, FPL is trying to do this. I don't really have my own opinion on which one to go to, I just follow the train where everyone else goes I go.
Do you like the new system that ESEA opened with getting more money for winning matches?
I think it's a good idea because a lot of pro players have scrims and they play CS throughout the whole day, so they have a chance to win something a night, instead of having a lower chance at winning throughout the week.
steel, DAVEY, and some others have been pretty critical of the players who play in FPL. Do you think that they have a good point?
I think they have to understand that there won't be practice they have in pro matches or pro scrims because it's just a pug team, it's just a mix team. As long as people are trying, I feel like if you're trying and you're giving it your best, I really don't care if we lose. I think they expect it to be like a scrim, but you're not going to get that out of a mixed pug with non-pros and pros.
s0m's organization compLexity are next set to compete in the ESL One Cologne North America closed qualifier. Outside of FPL/Rank S, he most recently competed in a mixteam alongside Sean "seang@res" Gares and other well-known players for the DreamHack Valencia qualifier.
