CLG Red fall to Besiktas in DreamHack Showdown final
DreamHack Showdown has come to an end, seeing European squad Besiktas crowned as champions.
The day started off Besiktas taking on North American squad Dignitas fe, a straightforward affair that saw the Europeans cruise to a 2-0 victory. The usually reliable Amanda "rain" Smith was uncharacteristically quiet during the series for Dignitas, while the duo of Petra "Petra" Stoker and Anastasia "kr4sylya" Khlobystina were unstoppable for Besiktas.
The next semifinal pitted CLG Red against Demise fe, and this was an even quicker demolition than the previous series, with the Europeans having absolutely no answers for Catherine "CAth" Leroux and Emma "Emy" Choe.
The grand final was the first and only series of the tournament to go the distance, as Besiktas bent under pressure from CLG Red, but did not break.
Starting off on CLG Red's pick of Vertigo, Besiktas went into the half with a narrow 8-7 lead. A pistol win for the Europeans after the side switch put the map firmly into their favor, as they sped to a 16-10 win to steal the North American team's map.
Mirage was the complete opposite of Vertigo, as CLG Red once again won the opening pistol and never looked back, holding a commanding 11-4 lead at the half. Another pistol win nearly gave them the map, but Besiktas would notch one more round before ultimately succumbing 16-5.
In fitting fashion for the final map of the series and tournament, Inferno was the most hotly contested of the bunch. It didn't start out that way, however, as Besiktas would ride a 7-0 start on the Terrorist side to an eventual 11-4 lead.
CLG Red got back into the game by winning their own T-side pistol, narrowing the lead to 11-7, and eventually 12-9. But despite the best efforts of long-standing member Diane "di^" Tran, Besiktas would play lockdown defense for the next four rounds, securing both the map and first place.
With the victory, the ladies of Besiktas have not only claimed the $50,000 first prize, but also a spot at DreamHack Open Rotterdam, which will take place in October in the Dutch port city.
