Team Spirit claims PW Shanghai Major title in thrilling grand final
The final map of the Perfect World Shanghai Major was nothing short of cinematic. Team Spirit closed out the series against a furious FaZe Clan comeback attempt, and Danil "donk" Kryshkovets solidified his claim as the best player in the world right now in his rookie campaign.
It’s a heartbreak for FaZe and its supporters, but yet another trophy (and the most important one by far) for Spirit to close out a spectacular year.
Looking back at this Major, all anyone will be able to talk about is the final map. The series went the distance the unconventional way, with both teams taking the other’s map pick in confident fashion. The third and final map, Dust2, started dominantly for Spirit, who at one point led 10-2 before FaZe started to chip away at the lead.
Some truly spectacular rounds paved the road for a potential FaZe comeback, including a 2v4 in the penultimate round of regulation that featured a jumping AWP shot from Robin "ropz" Kool. But the entire Major came down to a 1v1 with time winding down, and it was Dmitriy "sh1ro" Sokolov who emerged victorious and secured the Spirit win.
An unforgettable final map locked in a historic result. At 17 years old, donk not only locked in his spot as player of the year, but he became the youngest player ever to win a Major and lift a Major MVP trophy. He also posted the highest ever individual event rating for a Major MVP. This trophy completes a stellar year for Spirit, who also hoisted trophies at IEM Katowice and the BLAST Spring Final.
